What Is Lasik Eye Surgery?

Introduction to Lasik eye surgery

Laser in situ keratomileusis is what Lasik stands for. In this procedure, a laser beam  is used for treating the refractive errors of the eye and thereby improving vision as well as reducing or totally eliminating the use of contact lenses or glasses. This procedure changes the cornea’s shape. Cornea is a transparent front covering part of the eye. This type of eye surgery has been used since years and is very popular among individuals of all generations.

How Lasikeye surgery works?

In the Lasik eye surgery, a specially trained and experienced eye surgeon will first create a thin, précised hinged corneal flap with the help of microkeratome. The flap is then pulled back so that the underlying corneal tissue gets exposed. Then excimer laser reshapes the cornea in some pre-specified pattern which is different for different patients. Once this is done, the, surgeon repositions the flap onto the cornea without sutures.

About refractive error

The lens inside the eyes and the front surface are called the cornea together, which form the focussing system of the eye. This system is primarily responsible to focus incoming light rays right onto the retina surface, similar to the camera focus light which is done using lenses on the film. In case of a perfect optical system, the lens and cornea power are matched perfectly with the image focus and eye length. When a mismatch occurs, such a condition is known as refractive error when the individual starts seeing blurred images. A few other eye problems which can be dealt with using the laser surgery are as follows-

Myopia-: the mismatch in eye length and focussing power leads to blurry distant objects and clear nearer object.

Hyperopia-: mismatch in eye length and focussing power leads to burry near objects and clearer distant objects.

Astigmatism-: either the lens or corneal shape is distorted thereby causing formation of multiple images.
